A Wash & Go in FOUR Simple Steps with Cantu Shea Butter Coconut Curling Cream

I recently posted this pic on Instagram and many people asked if this was a twist out. It isn’t – It’s my version of a simple wash & go. I usually use Let’s Jam Custard Cream Gel to achieve my wash & gos but for the curls above I used Cantu’s Shea Butter Coconut Curling Cream (from the August Curlbox).

Here’s how I did it:

Step 1: Start with freshly washed and conditioned strands (keep a spray bottle handy in case your hair dries quickly; you’ll want to keep it wet).

Step 2: Section hair (I go from ear to ear), starting at the bottom. For each section, apply about a fingertip full of the Curling Cream. Be sure to coat the hair through to the ends (trust me, a little goes a long way). Next, apply the Eco-Styler Olive Oil Gel over the Curling Cream (once again, a little goes a long way). Twirl the ends of your hair around your finger (this helps create and maintain curl shape).

Step 3: After you’ve completed each section, allow your hair to dry (either naturally or underneath a tabletop or bonnet dryer). I personally like to dry my hair under a bonnet dryer – it gives me more precise results.

Step 4: Once your hair is dry, you might have to separate the curls that may have clumped. Separating the clumps promotes volume (a LOT of it!) and definition.

This wash & go lasted me about 3 days (I don’t usually get more than 4 days out of a W&G). My hair did stay moisturized but the curls ended up shrinking (the gel helped elongate the curls). I think if the Curling Cream was used alone, my curls would have shrunken even more simply because this is a lightweight cream.

I received the Cantu Shea Butter for Natural Hair Coconut Curling Cream in my curlBOX and couldn’t wait to try it out! The scent alone had me at “Hello!” I used it here and told you all I would review it. Did it live up to my expectations? I already don’t have a problem embracing my curls, kinks and waves, but I could this helping the person who is on the fence about their texture get that extra boost of confidence. It definitely defines your curls!

Directions:
Smooth onto damp hair section by section from the root down the hair shaft. Do not rinse out. Can be used on dry hair to enhance curls.

Consistency:
It has a thicker, cream based consistency; a consistency in which I favor. It doesn’t feel watery or too gel like (or even mucus like). It is also doesn’t budge making it a very “clean room” friendly product (won’t drip everywhere).

The Scent:
I’ve already touched on this, but it smells soooo good! I can’t get over how good it smells. It has a coconut scent that is not too overpowering, but you know it’s there. I don’t smell it when the wind blows but I do smell it when I touch my hair for prolonged periods of time. Absolutely fab!

The Ingredients:
“No mineral oil, sulfates, parabens, silicone, phthalates, gluten, paraffin, propylene glycol, PABA or DEA”

Thank you, Jesus and Amen. Because I am in search of products that are less harsh on the environment (and my hair), this won me over!

Results from a Twist-out

You can refer to this to find out exactly how I styled my hair with the product (the process)

I raked the Coconut Curling Cream through my hair in a process known as shingling, by which I use small sections or hair (starting from the back and working myself toward the front), apply product to that section, smooth the product on using my fingers (or Tangle Teezer) so that I can get my strands fully coated. I followed up with Eco Styler Gel – Argon Oil for a slight hold. I typically let my hair air dry, but I used a diffuser instead. I have performed a wash-n-go before. You can read about it here.

Sooner or later, I am going to have to record a wash-n-go video. LOL

Overall Conclusions:
All in all, I have nothing but good things to say about this product. I will be using this until it runs out and will probably keep a stash on deck. My hair feels extra soft and moisturized, so much so that I don’t even have to apply product the next two days after using it. It defines my curls and doesn’t leave my hair crunchy (even when paired with the Eco Styler Argon Oil Gel).

I can’t begin to explain how happy I am with my Curlbox subscription. Each box seems to be better than the last – I’ve yet to be disappointed.
